ANTIOXIDANT SMOOTHIE BOWL
This is a quick and easy recipe that can be made in as little as 5 minutes! I always prep a bag of frozen fruits and veggies the night before so I can toss them into the blender for a super fast smoothie.
TIP: Make a bunch of bags for the week ahead!
My typical smoothie includes:
– Organic Spinach
– Organic Strawberries
– Organic Bananas
– Mango (usually but not always)
– Almond Milk (you can substitute other milks or water)
– Turmeric (fresh)
– Black Pepper (I’ll explain!!)
My toppings do vary but they’re generally as follows:
– Granola (Organic & honey free since I’m vegan)
– Organic Blueberries
– Sliced organic strawberries
– Almond slivers (or other nuts/seeds depending on what I have)
The night before I prepare this smoothie bowl I always prep some fruit beforehand. I buy a big bag of frozen organic strawberries and bananas, as well as mangos. I like to use more strawberry and mango and less banana because the berries and mango have more antioxidants. I put my mixed fruit into a ziplock bag with my turmeric and ginger (1/4 – 1/2 inch piece of each depending on how strong I want it).
In the morning I throw the contents of the bag into the blender, add my almond milk, fresh spinach, flax seeds, black pepper (just a pinch!), and BLEND BLEND BLEND.
When the spinach is all blended evenly throughout and it has a nice ‘smoothie’ texture I go ahead and transfer it to a bowl and start adding my toppings. You can add whatever toppings you like to make this a colorful and fun breakfast. My favorites are fresh organic berries, granola, and nuts like almonds.
Be careful when adding certain nuts, like walnuts for example, because they have close to 20g of fat for 1 palmful.
OK, now I know what you’re wondering… turmeric, ginger, and black pepper?!
YES! These contain signifiant amounts of anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants. Turmeric has been shown to have some anti-carcinogenic effects as well. The black pepper goes hand-in-hand with the turmeric.
Black pepper contains piperine- this boosts the bioavailability of drugs by inhibiting the metabolism of their ingredients. The piperine blocks the liver from flushing the great turmeric compounds out of the body too quickly and allows more of those amazing benefits to be taken into your bloodstream!
